Somatic Experiencing® is a body based trauma intervention. Developed by Dr Peter Levine, it’s a technique that focuses on sensations in the body, and incomplete physical responses, with an aim to restoring a sense of wholeness. Trauma responses, such as dissociation, that were once useful, can get stuck and become habitual. Where a client wishes, I integrate Somatic Experiencing® into sessions to support the gentle release of these patterns.
In Somatic Experiencing® there’s an emphasis on ‘resourcing’ and ‘pendulation’, in order to ensure the client has enough capacity to deal with what is coming up for them. This is achieved by moving between revisiting traumatic memories and accompanying the activation, and returning to a more grounded and regulated state.
For many people, working with bodily sensations in this way can feel new. For others, working with bodily sensations may not be appropriate and we might incorporate images or other creative ways of working.
‘It is through reconnecting with our bodies that we can begin to heal the wounds of trauma’. Peter Levine
I see clients at The Practice Rooms in central Brighton on Monday and in a comfortable practice room near Lewes train station on Thursdays.
