Somatic Experiencing® is a body based trauma intervention. Developed by Dr Peter Levine, Somatic Experiencing® is a bottom up technique that focuses on sensations in the body and incomplete trauma responses. Fight/Flight/Freeze patterns, that were once useful to us can get stuck and become our habitual response. Where a client wishes, I integrate learning from my ongoing Somatic Experiencing® training into my counselling practice to support them to recognise and gently release these patterns.
In Somatic Experiencing® there’s an emphasis on ‘resourcing’ and ‘pendulation’. That means making sure the client has enough capacity to deal with what is coming up for them, and oscillating between revisiting traumatic memories and returning to a grounded and regulated state.
For many people working with bodily sensations in this way can feel new. Some clients like to start sessions with a short body scan mediation, as a way to arrive more fully in the space. To get a taste of my style and approach feel free to check out the body scan and somatic writing workshop videos below.
